What Is Your Shoulder Pain?

The shoulder being such a complex structure can have pain originating from many different issues such as:

- Rotator cuff pathology

- Bursitis

- Frozen shoulder

- Biceps tendinopathy

- Labral tear

- Impingement

- Gall bladder pathology

- Cardiac pathology

- Osteoarthritis

- Rheumatoid arthritis

- Etc.

Our shoulder joint is designed so that it sacrifices stability in order to achieve greater mobility, enabling us to perform complex actions. Our shoulder joint is supported and connected to the body by muscles and even though this advantage gives us a wide range of motion it leaves the shoulder vulnerable to injury.

In knowing this, we can understand the importance of muscular balance in relation to the shoulder girdle and the importance in a neutral posture to minimise the risk of injury to this complex joint.

Furthermore, the importance of mobility is key, not only of the shoulder girdle itself but the direct connection to the body through the thoracic spine. Upper cross posture is a common presentation which can predispose the shoulder to injury and is demonstrated in the picture:

Stretching these tightened muscles and strengthening the weakened muscles can help improve posture and decrease the risk of many different shoulder injuries. To find out if you are suffering from upper cross posture and identify which exercises will benefit you, book in today! By addressing these areas of restriction and muscular imbalances we can decrease the risk of shoulder injury.
